The secret to making your band instantly sound better !
Here's the scenario: you go to your local club to see a band and they play a song or two. "Not bad" you're thinking. Along comes the next song and ... ugh, sheesh, the singer couldn't hit the high notes or maybe the guitar player played the lead all wrong. Maybe the drummer couldn't get the beat right. Instantly your image of the "good" band is shattered. OK, so they play the next song not too bad but the one after that, BAH ! Another botched guitar part that you just know wasn't right, and you don't even play guitar. And this scenario goes on for the rest of the nite, if you stay that long. How Do You Make Your Band Sound Better?
The dirty little secret to making your band sound instantly better is .... STOP PLAYING THE SONGS YOU STINK AT! It's that simple. There must be millions of songs out there to play. So why do you only play some of the songs you are good at? Stop playing those songs that you don't sound 100% great at. You could at least put those songs on hold until you hone them to perfection. You'll be amazed at the complements you'll receive when people don't hear you sounding like crap half of your set. Get a portable recorder or a video camera and record yourself. Listen to it from an audience perspective. Better yet, get someone else to critique you. Someone like Simon Cowell. Find someone that will tell you it is "bloody awful" when it is.
Hey, I have another idea. Instead of playing someone else's songs (cover tunes) write your OWN songs and play them ! What a concept ! You will never make it playing someone else's songs. People like to hear new music, especially if it's good. And just think, if you play the song wrong, nobody will even know !
